PASTOR BOB AND ALICE SMITH
Who are we? Well, my wife and I are now retired and living in Frankenmuth, Michigan. In the summer of 2006, Alice and I returned from serving as educational missionaries located in Lippo Karawaci, Indonesia. We have also lived and worked in the United States, Hong Kong, Nigeria and South Korea and led mission trips to Russia, Hong Kong, Guatemala, the Philippines, India (Calcutta), and within Indonesia. In 2002, I was a member of a three-person team which surveyed Afghanistan for humanitarian reconstruction projects. During 2011, we spent a month in Peru, South America. In 2011, I also traveled to Nigeria, West Africa to celebrate with the Lutheran Church of Nigeria (LCN) on their 75th anniversary. While in Nigeria, I observed the 25th anniversary of my ordination which had taken place at the 50th LCN anniversary celebration in Nigeria.
Before all that traveling, while teaching at St. Lorenz Lutheran School in Frankenmuth, Michigan I was honored as the director of the first non-public demonstration center by the USA’s President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. In 1988 Concordia University-Chicago, Illinois, recognized my contributions to Christian education by selecting me as Alumnus of the Year. I was awarded a Servant Leader award by Seoul Foreign School in 2001. I have written articles for several publications and I am the author of two books on prayer (Keep Me From Evil, Harm and Fear, 2004) (Keep Me and Keep All, 2011). In 2015, I received the Alumnus of the Year Award from Concordia University-St. Paul, Minnesota.
Alice was honored in 1996 as the Distinguished Lutheran Elementary Teacher of the Year. In 2006 she closed her teaching career with the honor of being selected as the Lutheran Education Association Distinguished International Lutheran Teacher. Alice published her first book in 2010. It is a children’s mystery story entitled: Under the Eye of the Magpie. In 2017, Alice received the Alumnus of the Year Award from Concordia St. Paul, Minnesota.
As a couple we represented the World Mission Prayer League at the World Prayer Assembly in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2012. In 2014 we spent 5 months in Papua, Indonesia mentoring teachers in two local Christian schools. In 2016 we spent a week in South Africa and a week in Ghana. As members of a speaking team from the Lutheran Education Association we spoke at teacher’s conferences, church services, visited classrooms, and met with teachers and administrators of Lutheran churches and schools.
We have two sons and eight grandchildren: Our son, Kurtis, with his wife, Teresa, and their family live in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Kurtis is a consultant for various nonprofits. Teresa is an excellent private chef. Eric, with his wife, Susie, and family live in Saginaw, Michigan. Eric teaches at Valley Lutheran High School in Saginaw. His wife, Susie, the principle at Faith Lutheran School in Bay City. Each family has blessed us with four grandchildren. We are also now blessed with one great grandchild.
