ALUMNI DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD RECIPIENT:
ALICE (KRATT, A.A. '62, M.A. '00) SMITH
The Alumni Distinguished Service Award allows Concordia University, St. Paul to recognize its alumni who are exceptionally accomplished in their fields of endeavor. They have also upheld Concordia's ideals in their profession and in service to the community and the church of Jesus Christ. Alice is one of the four recipients that was presented the award on September 29th at Concordia University. The other three were THOMAS KUSESKE (ACAD. '64, '68), REV. DR. DAVID PREUSS (ACAD. '57, J.C. '59), and REV. DR. ROBERT RAHN (ACAD. '54, J.C. 56).
Alice Evangeline (Kratt) Smith grew up on a dairy farm in Morristown, Minnesota. Following her graduation from Morristown Public School, Alice earned an Associate in Arts Degree at Concordia St. Paul in 1962. She completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Education at Concordia Teacher’s College in River Forest, Illinois in 1964. She earned Lutheran Principal’s certification through the Lutheran Principal’s Academy/ Concordia Seward. After earning academic credits from several universities, she officially completed her Master’s Degree in Education at Concordia St. Paul in the year 2000.
Alice has been a Lutheran teacher in Minnesota, Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois. She has also taught at Hong Kong International School in Hong Kong, China, Hillcrest School in Jos, Nigeria, Seoul Foreign School in Seoul, South Korea, and Sekolah Pelita Harapan in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Smiths maintained a house church in their own home while living in Indonesia. She and her husband, Rev. Robert Smith (J.C. '61), now live in Frankenmuth, Michigan, the place where they began their marriage, over 50 years ago.
Her classrooms have been composed of single grades, combined grades, and team-teaching, including cross cultural, and bilingual students. Alice has served as a lead teacher for curriculum planning and as a school principal. She completed the International Baccalaureate Teacher’s Certification and has served as a mentor-consultant with teachers across the globe. With a strong expertise in Language Arts, Alice has guided hundreds of students through the writing process to create books of their own through desktop publishing.
In 1996, Alice was honored as the Distinguished Elementary Teacher of the Year by the Lutheran Education Association. In 2006, she was honored as the LEA International Teacher of the Year. In 2014, she and her husband served for six months in Papua, Indonesia, where they worked with a team of mentor/consultants at a new Christian school. In May of 2017, Alice and her husband traveled to Africa where they spoke at meetings of the Lutheran Education Convention in South Africa. They also met with students, educators, and administrators in Ghana.
Alice and her husband are proud of their two sons, their wives, and eight grandchildren. She is an inspirational speaker for women’s groups, a bible class leader, book club member, and a piano accompanist for Sunday services at a senior home. Alice presently serves as president of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League at St. Lorenz Lutheran Church in Frankenmuth, Michigan.
In 2010, Alice published a children’s book, Under the Eye of the Magpie. Because of its setting in Seoul, simple plot, and simple English language, it is being used as a resource at a university in Seoul, Korea for students in the English Second Language program.
